I paint forms derived from the observed world, but I work to render these in a manner that resists specific naming. Thin layers of paint, are applied so as to reveal old marks, light, and color – I want to be open to the surprise within these layers, and leave room for the mysterious workings that surface while in the process of painting.
The forms that find their way into my work are ones I encounter, draw, photograph and stare at during the course of early morning rows in my single shell, bike rides and /or long walks to and from the studio. I am under and through bridges, aside old and current industrial sites interspersed with gardens, storage yards, and a general mishmash landscape. I find the messy side of life enticing – a mix of organic and man-made that over time re-enters organic form. That connection between organic and architectonic has drawn my eye and art-making sensibility for a solid ten years.
